COCHRANE’S NEW AQUATIC CENTRE OFFICIALLY OPENS

IMG_0867

Cochrane’s much-anticipated aquatic centre officially opened Sunday.

The ribbon was cut by sponsors, elected officials and facility board members followed by community residents enjoying a first splash in the water.

Work began in March 2015 on the $48 million, 150,000 square foot expansion to Cochrane’s Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. Portions of the facility opened on a phased basis with the curling, multisport area opening to the public in June, and the fitness area following closely thereafter.

“The Government of Canada is proud to have contributed to the expansion of Cochrane’s Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre,” said the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. “Sports and recreational infrastructure are integral to building engaged, active, and healthy communities and this investment will help make Cochrane a more sustainable, and inclusive place for residents and families to live, play and work.”

“The Alberta government is committed to making life better for Albertans,” said Municipal Affairs Minister, Shaye Anderson. “Projects such as the Aquatic Centre create jobs, and recreation facilities contribute to our physical and mental health and bring neighbours and families together. We’re proud to have contributed $22.7 million in approved Municipal Sustainability Initiative funding to expand this invaluable community infrastructure.”

The remaining funding was only possible with the support of Cochrane and area residents, generous community organizations, developers, individuals and Rocky View County.  Cochrane used $2,330,122 of its federal Gas Tax Fund (GTF) allocation toward this project. The Town also launched the Rock the Waves fundraising campaign in summer 2014, which has raised $4.9 million to date.

Representatives from Jayman BUILT Ltd, the name sponsor for the Jayman BUILT Aquatic Centre, and LaVita Land Inc, name sponsor of the Fireside Fitness Centre, attended today’s ceremony.

Cochrane Mayor Ivan Brooker appreciates the contributions of all partners and sponsors. “Our partners, sponsors and supporters of this great facility are a true testament to what a community can build when people work together,” he said.

“We have everything from groups of kids contributing lemonade stand money to Jayman BUILT and LaVita Land supporting major pieces of this project, and partnerships with the Cochrane and District Warm Water Therapy Pool Society and the Cochrane Curling Club helping make this truly a community facility.”

After today’s event, the facility was opened to the general public. A community celebration with free activities is scheduled for September 9-10.
