Cochrane resumes weekly organics curbside collection on April 15

(Cochrane, AB) – With the start of spring, Cochrane will resume its weekly curbside collection of organics carts on Monday, April 15, 2024. Residents can expect to have their household organics and yard waste collected on a weekly basis throughout the spring, summer and into fall.

Green carts help divert organic waste such as kitchen scraps, yard waste and pet waste from the landfill. Since Cochrane implemented the recycling curbside program and organics curbside collection, 2011 and 2017 respectively, the community has diverted over 45,000 metric tons of waste from landfill.

“All material collected in green carts is used to make compost, a valuable material for helping grow plants. Cochrane uses compost to enhance our parks, help nearby family farms and agriculture operations, and support residents to improve their own landscaping and gardens through the annual compost giveaway event, this year on May 4 and 11,” explains Shane Hubl, Director of Operations Services, Town of Cochrane “The quality of compost depends on the correct use of organics carts.  The annual return to a weekly organics collection is a great reminder to review what items should be added into organics, recycling and waste carts.”

Cochrane provides information on “What bin?” and item sorting on Cochrane.ca/wasteandrecycling and the My Cochrane Collection app.
