(Cochrane, AB) – Cochrane is implementing a series of traffic improvements along River Heights Drive starting April 3, aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of this corridor. These improvements are part of Cochrane's ongoing commitment to road safety and traffic management.

"We have been actively monitoring traffic in this area since opening the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge in November 2020,” said Drew Hyndman, Executive Director, Development & Infrastructure Services, Town of Cochrane. “With the recent announcement of a new K-8 school planned for the area and increasing traffic due to local residential development, these proactive measures will help to ensure the community is well prepared to receive the future school population.”

The upcoming traffic improvements include:

  • Speed limit reduction: Starting the week of April 3, the speed limit on River Heights Drive will be reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h from River Heights Lane to the existing school zone for Bow Valley High School.
  • Solar crosswalk installation: Scheduled for Spring 2024, a solar-powered crosswalk will be installed at the Riviera Way roundabout. An additional solar crosswalk was installed in 2022 at River Heights Drive and River Heights Lane.
  • Rivercrest traffic light installation: In summer 2024, a controlled and signaled intersection will be installed at the intersection of River Heights Drive and Rivercrest Drive / Willow Gate.

Cochrane continues to work with developers of Southbow Landing for the planned development of James Walker Trail. Municipal Enforcement will continue to monitor River Heights Drive to enforce traffic regulations and deter speeding.
