Creating more inclusive connections

We are improving pathway connections through Cochrane to provide more inclusive access between the Historic Ranche, Glenbow and the Bow River.

Last year, Council approved the construction of 3.65 km of paved pathways, with 2.1 km in Glenbow, 1.5 km in the Cochrane Ranche and tri-school connectors. The project also includes the replacement of four pedestrian bridges in Glenbow park, wayfinding signage, maps and multimodal markers to ensure residents and visitors can easily navigate and explore our community.

About the project

Cochrane is committed to creating a connected community for all ages and abilities to enjoy. In March 2022, Council endorsed an application to purse the Active Transportation Fund as a way to improve access between the Historic Ranche, Glenbow and the Bow River.

Upon securing the grant approval, our Parks team began to explore Glenbow and the Cochrane Ranche to better to understand what this project might look like.

Through the discovery phase, we identified a pressing need to revitalize the Glenbow bridges. While initially we were considering widening the pathway to 4 metres, Administration recognized that to accommodate this a significant number of trees would need to be removed. As a result, Administration reconsidered the goals of this project and will now be extending the pathway to 3 metres.

The total project cost for the bridge replacement and pathway paving is $3M, with $670,000 covered by the grant and $1.76M  from reserves. As a result of the project’s robust requirements, Administration will be bringing forward a request for $619,210.75 in additional funds to complete both projects to the April 22 2024  regular meeting of Council.  The additional funds are required to support adjustments in project timelines, compliance requirements with the Historical Resources Act, as well as inflationary factors. Construction Timelines

Cochrane Glenbow Trail Map

Phase 1:

  • Bridge replacement will happen from July through October 2024
  • Pathway preparation (including  tree removal and grading) will occur at the same time as the bridge replacement
  • The Glenbow north path will be closed for the entire duration of the project (July-October)

Phase 2+3:

  • The  Glenbow south and Cochrane Ranche paths will be closed for 2-3 weeks each to prep for paving (during July-October 2024)

All paving is planned to be completed at the end of the project.

Other considerations:

  •  Some segments of path may be reopened with a temporary gravel surface until paving can be completed
  • Phasing and construction timelines are subject to change
  • Keep an eye on this website for any changes to construction phasing.
