Mayor Jeff Genung got the news he was looking for at last week's AUMA conference in Red Deer.

The Minister of Transportation confirmed that funding is in place for the design and construction of the Highway 1A and 22 intersection.

Mayor Genung and members of Council and senior administration met with Transportation Minister Brian Mason - one of many scheduled meetings with provincial officials - during the annual Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) convention.

Mayor Genung says the confirmation was a highlight of the conference. "It was crucial for us that we had good, productive conversations while we had the opportunity," said the mayor. "In this case, the Minister of Transportation also provided a letter saying, in part, 'I can assure you that funding is approved for design and construction of the project.'"

Construction is scheduled to start in fall 2019, once land acquisition, utility relocation, and environmental approvals are completed.
