Cochrane’s Town Council was officially sworn in at an inauguration ceremony on Monday evening. The 2021-2025 Cochrane Town Council includes Mayor Jeff Genung, Councillor Marni Fedeyko, Councillor Susan Flowers, Councillor Tara McFadden, Councillor Morgan Nagel, Councillor Alex Reed and Councillor Patrick Wilson.
In the spirt of truth and recognition, the event was attended by a number of special guests including representatives from several bands of Stoney Nakoda First Nation. In addition, Councillor Krista Hunter from the Wesley First Nation, led the opening prayer, and Maryjane Beaver, an Elder from Wesley First Nation, offered the closing blessing.
“I am especially pleased that this Council’s official first act will be to welcome and present a special gift to our region’s first nations representatives,” said Mayor Jeff Genung. “At this important time where Truth and Reconciliation is front of mind, the significant act of blessing this Council’s Oath of Office is imbued with great meaning to all of us. We will remember this day because of the dignity and grace brought to the occasion.”
O Canada was performed virtually by Beck, Immy, and Sydnie of the Cochrane High Performing Arts Program, through the coordination of Cochrane High teacher Kyra Lake.
RCMP Inspector Dave Brunner, Detachment Commander, and Staff Sergeant Chad Fournier, Operations Non-Commissioned Officer presided over the event, witnessing the Oath of Office.
Council members were presented with a token of appreciation in recognition for their role as Mayor and Council for the 2017-2021 term. The Men of Vision award is an important honour presented by the Town of Cochrane to dignitaries who visit Cochrane and community members for significant contributions to the community. The award features the historic Cochrane Ranche brand of 1881, branded onto a cowhide, and then framed.
Following the inauguration ceremony, Council appointed the Deputy Mayor, determined committee and partnership appointments and confirmed the Committee of the Whole meeting schedule.
A short video of the inauguration ceremony will be shared on the Town’s website and social media channels later this week.
