1. What is the difference between Community Peace Officers and RCMP?

Community Peace Officers do not deal with criminal code matters unlike the RCMP.

2. Can a Community Peace Officer write speeding tickets?

Yes, Community Peace Officers are authorized to write speeding tickets.

3. What is the speed limit in town?

The speed limit in school zones is 30 km per hour between the hours of 7 am and 9 pm on school days, in alleyways it is 20 km per hour and unless otherwise posted the speed limit in town is 50 km per hour.

4. What is a traffic control device?

A traffic control device is any signal, device or marking used to regulate, warn or guide traffic. For instance, stop, yield and pedestrian signs and traffic lights.

5. Can I park a vehicle in the back alley?

Cars, trailers or any other vehicles may not be parked in town alleys or lanes. Alleys are to be utilized for loading and unloading of vehicles only. Utility, maintenance and sometimes emergency vehicles require alleys for access (Traffic Bylaw 02/2005).

6. Are vehicles allowed to idle?

Yes, vehicles may idle for a maximum of 20 minutes in a residential area (Traffic Bylaw 02/2005).

7. Where can I pay a ticket?

8. Can I park my recreation vehicle / motor home / utility trailer on my driveway?

Yes, they can be parked in your driveway from May 1 to October 31 of each year. (Land Use Bylaw 01/2022).

9. How long can a trailer be parked in one spot on the street?

Trailers can park for 72 hours, but they must be attached to the towing vehicle. After 72 hours, you must move the vehicle to an off-street location for a period of not less than 72 hours before it can be parked on the street again (Traffic Bylaw 02/2005).

10. Can I wash my vehicle on my driveway or road?

Washing, repairing or servicing a vehicle on or near any Town road or street ("highway" in the provincial Traffic Safety Act) in a manner that allows soap suds, mud, cement, refuse, debris, tar, oil, grease, antifreeze or other vehicle fluids to flow onto or enter upon a Town road or street is not permitted.

11. How soon after a snowfall do I have to shovel my sidewalk?

After a snowfall, home and business owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from the sidewalks adjacent to their property within 48 hours of the snowfall. In the interest of public safety, Community Peace Officers may require that ice be removed even sooner (Snow Removal Bylaw 01/2009).

12. Do I need to maintain the boulevard that borders my property?

Yes, boulevards are owned by the Town but are maintained by property owners, including grass cutting and weed control (Nuisance and Unsightly Premises Bylaw 04/2007).

13. Does the Town have a Noise Bylaw?

Yes. Please review the Noise Control Bylaw 02/2011 for more information.

14. Can I have a clothesline in my yard?

There is no Town Bylaw currently that restricts clotheslines. However, there may be a restrictive covenant in place for your neighbourhood. If there is, it will be on your Certificate of Title. Certificates of Title can be obtained from the town office for $15 or through Alberta Registries.
