2. What are the benefits of obtaining a permit?

If you have a permit you can feel secure knowing that the installation will conform to construction and safety standards that have been accepted under the Safety Codes Act. The cost of the permit also includes inspection(s) by certified Safety Codes Officers.

The Safety Codes Act requires that all contractors and homeowners in Alberta obtain permits prior to commencing work on buildings covered by the Alberta Building and Fire Codes, the Canadian Electrical Code, the Gas Codes or the National Plumbing Code. 4. Do I need a permit to build a fence?

You do not need a permit if you are building a fence that is in compliance with Cochrane’s Land Use Bylaw (Sections 11.6 and 11.7). This means the fence height should not exceed 2.0m in the rear yard, and should not exceed 1.0m in the front yard. For corner lots, sightlines have to be maintained. This means the property corner facing two streets should maintain a 7.6m x 7.6m triangle sightline, in which no vegetation or structures should exceed 1.0m in height. Also, many properties in Town have utility right-of-ways in their front yards. A fence should not be placed within the right-of-way.

5. Can homeowners take out electrical, plumbing or gas permits?

Homeowners can take out electrical and plumbing permits as long as they are a resident in the home. However, gas permits must be obtained by a certified gasfitter.
