What is FireSmart?
FireSmart is a proactive community safety program aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire damage through efforts like vegetation management, fuel reduction and public education. In Cochrane, a wildfire-prone area, FireSmart activities play a vital role in protecting homes, businesses, trails, parks and natural spaces.
The Town of Cochrane is committed to proactively reducing the risk of wildfires and enhancing community safety through the FireSmart program. As a FireSmart community, Cochrane has implemented strategic vegetation management initiatives to mitigate wildfire threats. Over the years, FireSmart thinning has been conducted in key areas across town. Trees within Cochrane’s municipal jurisdiction are assessed and prioritized based on FireSmart principles and guidance from wildfire behavior specialists.
Cochrane’s Wildfire mitigation strategy outlines a comprehensive approach to wildfire risk reduction, including hazard assessments, wildland fuel mapping, vegetation management strategies, and FireSmart recommendations. This plan ensures Cochrane remains prepared and resilient against the growing threat of wildfires.
Project timeline and locations
Beginning on February 20, 2025 (weather dependent), Cochrane’s FireSmart contractors will commence operations in Bow Meadows, Bow Ridge, and Crawford Ranche, before progressing to Riveria, Cochrane Heights, and the area adjacent to Lofts on the Bow. It will take approximately 3 months to complete.
Our action plan
We're taking proactive steps to enhance wildfire resilience in Cochrane by implementing a comprehensive FireSmart program. Our approach focuses on reducing fire risks while preserving the natural beauty and ecological balance of our community.
Make your property FireSmart
Wildfires are a natural part of Alberta’s landscape, but by taking proactive steps, you can reduce the risk to your home and property. FireSmart principles are proven to help protect homes and communities from wildfire damage. With a few simple changes, you can increase your home’s resilience and improve overall safety.
Wildfires don’t just ignite homes directly - they spread through embers, surface fires, and large flames. The area surrounding your home, up to 100 metres from the foundation, is known as the Home Ignition Zone, and taking proactive FireSmart measures can significantly reduce the risk of wildfire damage.
By applying FireSmart principles, you can protect your home by reducing potential fuel sources and creating a more fire-resistant environment. To help reduce wildfire risks, protect your home with these proven strategies:
Environmental commitment
FireSmart activities are carefully planned with environmental considerations to minimize impacts on wildlife and preserve critical habitats. Specialists like qualified biologists, and registered professional foresters will assess, monitor, and be on-site daily in project areas, ensuring that bird nesting sites, deer habitats, and other important natural spaces remain intact. Work will be scheduled around critical nesting periods, preserving habitats within the final landscape.
While FireSmart operations may temporarily impact trails and parks, public safety remains a priority. Some areas may experience closures or restricted access, with updates on affected locations provided in advance.
Funding and support
Cochrane has received $229,000 in grant funding from the Forest Improvement Association of Alberta (FRIAA) and is expected to complete these phases over the next 3 months. FireSmart work in Cochrane is supported by funding from the FireSmart Community Grant Program and partnerships with provincial and municipal agencies.
Together, we're building a FireSmart community that's safer and more resilient for everyone.
