Planning a garage, deck or basement development? Check the permit requirements.

(Cochrane, AB) – With spring renovation season just around the corner, the Town is encouraging residents and contractors to confirm what permits are required and begin the application process before starting home improvement or development projects. Many permit applications are submitted during the busy spring months, and applying early helps projects stay on schedule while meeting safety code requirements.

A number of common home improvement projects require building permits, including building or expanding a garage, constructing a shed, adding or replacing a deck, installing a hot tub, developing a basement. Electrical, plumbing and gas work associated with these projects will also require separate permits. Checking requirements in advance ensures homeowners understand what approvals and inspections are needed before work begins.

In 2025, the Town of Cochrane saw a 20 per cent increase in building, electrical, plumbing and gas permit applications compared to 2024. Applications covered a wide range of projects— reflecting continued and sustained increases in construction activity year over year in Cochrane.

“The permit application process is an important part of any home improvement project.” said Mark Krysinski, Director of Community Growth, Town of Cochrane. “Starting with the right permits and booking inspections at the right stages helps ensure projects meet safety code requirements, and avoid any rework required to address deficiencies.”

Submitting permit applications before construction begins allows plans to be reviewed and potential issues to be identified early. Required inspections at key milestones confirm that work aligns with approved plans and provincial safety codes. This process not only helps prevent costly rework, but also supports safe, resilient neighbourhoods across Cochrane.

“We encourage residents to connect with us early in their planning process so we can make sure they have the information they need to move forward with confidence,” added Krysinski. “By understanding permit requirements and timelines upfront, homeowners can keep their projects progressing smoothly.”
