Home occupations

A home occupation is a business that operates from a residential dwelling. All home occupations must comply with the land use bylaw to ensure the businesses fit well within residential neighbourhoods. 

There are two types of home occupations in Cochrane. 

Types of home occupations

Home occupation – Class one

A class one home occupation: 

  • does not involve client or customer visits to the home 
  • does not involve on-site employees who do not live in the home
  • requires a business licence to operate 
  • does not require a development permit to operate

Home occupation – Class two

A class two home occupation: 

  • includes up to six client or customer visits per day, and or 
  • includes one on-site employee who does not live in the residence
  • requires both a business licence and a development permit to operate
