Exciting transit changes coming to Cochrane
The Town of Cochrane is undertaking a significant transformation of its public transit system to better serve the needs of our growing community. Over the next five years, we will implement a hybrid transit model that combines fixed routes with on-request services. These changes are designed to improve the reliability, accessibility, and flexibility of our transit network, ensuring Cochrane remains a connected, sustainable, and inclusive community.
What’s changing
- Hybrid transit model - The new model integrates both fixed routes and on-request services to create a more flexible and reliable system. This approach allows us to serve high-demand areas while ensuring consistency along key corridors. The goal is to provide more travel options and improved service across Cochrane, meeting the diverse needs of our residents.
- Fixed routes - Starting in the summer 2025, Cochrane will introduce its fixed-route transit system, initially launching with three bus routes. Fixed routes are based on a set schedule and serve specific, predetermined stops. These routes are designed to provide consistent and predictable service, enabling riders to plan their trips more effectively.
- Proposed routes for 2025
- Route 1: Sunset Ridge → Downtown → SLS Centre
- Route 2: Heritage Hills → Downtown → Cochrane Arena / Big Hill Lodge
- Route 3: Fireside → SLS Centre → Downtown

- Long-term growth - The new transit model is designed to support Cochrane’s long-term, sustainable growth. By improving the transit system, we aim to reduce traffic congestion, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and minimize the town’s carbon footprint while modernizing public transportation to meet the needs of a growing population.
Supporting connectivity
At the heart of this transformation is connectivity. By enhancing our infrastructure and connecting key neighborhoods, services, and facilities, we are strengthening both the social and physical fabric of the community. The new transit system is a vital step toward making Cochrane a more interconnected, sustainable, and thriving community.
Key benefits of the hybrid transit system:
- Livability - The hybrid model is designed to improve livability by reducing traffic congestion and increasing accessibility. It will lead to more efficient travel, reducing commute times and providing better access to essential services for all residents.
- Universal access - The hybrid transit system will ensure that all residents, including seniors and students, have access to reliable and consistent transportation, promoting equal mobility for everyone in Cochrane.
- Community progress - This new system represents an important step in Cochrane’s ongoing evolution, combining innovation with the town’s transportation legacy. It supports the community’s commitment to progress, efficiency, and sustainability.
- Sustainable growth - The hybrid transit model aligns with Cochrane’s commitment to responsible growth. It will contribute to a healthier environment, supporting the town’s future growth while reducing the impact on our carbon footprint.
These changes are part of our ongoing commitment to modernizing and expanding Cochrane’s transit network, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of our community. As we move forward, these improvements will enhance accessibility, reliability, and sustainability for all residents.
Connectivity remains a key priority for Cochrane, strengthening both physical and social ties within the community. By linking neighborhoods, investing in roadway and pathway infrastructure, and offering diverse transportation options, we’re creating a more connected and accessible town for everyone.
