All of the Cochrane Music Society ensembles are excitedly preparing for their upcoming Spring Showcase Concert, Saturday, May 10 at 7pm at the Cochrane Alliance Church.
Choral Waves’ repertoire centres on the theme that we are all in this complicated, yet wonderful life together. Ranging from classical to Gordon Lightfoot and Harry Belafonte tunes, it is about how together, we can “Turn The World Around”.
This year, Cochrane Music Society commissioned Calgary composer, Oliver Munar, to compose a piece for Choral Waves and they will premiere his piece "Together" with lyrics by Ruth Ullyatt, one of our very own soprano singers.
The theme of both the concert and jazz bands is the stories we tell and who we really are behind those stories. Riverside Jazz has a lineup of iconic charts from Chick Corea’s jazz fusion standard "Spain" to Antonio Carlos Jobim’s bossa nova "The Girl from Ipanema" to Elton John’s pop rock "I’m Still Standing".
Band on the Bow stories are about love, with repertoire that spans almost 100 years from the 1876 Czech opera "Hubička" (The Kiss) to the Beatles; gratitude expressed by the Japanese "Variations on Plum Blossom Theme" and "Grace Before Sleep" by American composer Susan LaBarr; and appreciation of the grandeur of our own Pacific coast in the "Cascadia Suite" by Robert Buckley.
