(Cochrane, AB) – On September 10, Cochrane residents are invited to take part in A Walk for Life, a community event offering a meaningful way to remember loved ones lost to suicide while raising awareness about prevention and mental health support.
Organized by Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) in partnership with local organizations, the walk begins at 6 a.m. at Riverfront Park, just before sunrise. The timing symbolizes the emotional journey from darkness to light, from pain to hope.
“Suicide affects every community and Cochrane is no exception,” says Kim Krawec, Manager of FCSS, Town of Cochrane. “This walk offers a space for reflection, remembrance and connection. It is an important reminder for anyone who may be struggling that they are not alone and that support is available.”
Suicide affects people of all ages, backgrounds and communities across Canada. Every day, an average of 12 people die by suicide in Canada - including approximately two Albertans. Each loss deeply impacts 15-30 others, leaving behind grieving families, friends and communities. Though often linked to youth, suicide rates among seniors are not much different than in those aged 20 to 39. Men complete suicide three times more than women and women attempt suicide two to three times more often than men.
Part of the national Run for Life campaign by the Centre for Suicide Prevention, this local walk brings the conversation closer to home. It’s not only a way to remember, but also a step toward breaking stigma and encouraging community connection. Local counsellors and therapists will be present to offer support to participants, along with resource workers from FCSS and FRN, who will help share information about local mental health services.
