(Cochrane, AB) – Cochrane celebrated the Fourth Avenue Wall enhancements earlier today, officially marking the completion of the Highway 1A improvements project. The enhancements represent an artistic addition to the new retaining wall, reflecting Cochrane's rich western heritage.

Measuring nearly 100 meters in width and nine meters in height, the retaining wall is a significant piece of infrastructure that is visible to residents and visitor alike, as they travel west on Highway 1A or throughout Cochrane’s downtown. The artistic elements of the wall were fully funded by the Town's Arts Endowment Reserve, supported by voluntary contributions from local developers. This is the first project to be funded through this reserve, which allows for meaningful aesthetic projects in the downtown core to come to fruition. The total cost for the wall enhancements project was budgeted at $250,000.

The completion of the wall enhancements marks a significant milestone in Cochrane's transformation over the past several years. The Highway 1A improvements project widened the roadway and added pathways and new alignments, while Centre Avenue Phase 3 facilitated the widening of a main corridor, relocating utilities and replacing underlying infrastructure. These initiatives lay the groundwork for the Province’s ongoing interchange project, which is set to further transform Cochrane’s roadways and landscape.

“Today, we can see just how far we’ve come,” said Mayor Genung, Town of Cochrane. “The journey hasn’t been without challenges, but as we look around at the new roads, pathways, and this iconic retaining wall, it’s clear that every effort has been worth it. This wall isn’t just infrastructure—it’s a special touch that reflects our pride in Cochrane and the bright, connected future we’re building together.”

Beginning the evening of October 10, the wall enhancements will be back lit from dusk to dawn. For more information on the fourth avenue wall enhancement, Highway 1A improvements, Centre Avenue Phase III, or Highway 1A/22 Interchange project, visit www.cochrane.ca/projects.
