(Cochrane, AB) – The Town of Cochrane officially dedicated Captain Huw Jeffries Park in Fireside today, unveiling a commemorative sign recognizing his more than three decades of service and lasting contributions to the community.
Captain Jeffries’ family and friends joined members of Council, Administration and representatives from Cochrane Fire Services for the official ceremony. Remarks from Town representatives and family members reflected on his life, his commitment to public service and the influence he had on those who worked alongside him.
The ceremony included the unveiling of a commemorative sign, unveiled by members of his family. The sign gives park visitors an opportunity to learn about the person behind the park’s name and his contributions to Cochrane.
Captain Jeffries began his career in Cochrane as a volunteer firefighter before becoming one of Cochrane Fire Services’ first full-time members. Throughout his service, he took on the roles of captain, instructor and mentor, helping shape the department and supporting generations of firefighters.
His contributions extended beyond responding to emergencies. Through teaching and mentorship, he helped fellow firefighters develop their skills and prepare for the demands of serving a growing community. His experience and guidance made him an important part of Cochrane Fire Services throughout his career.
"Naming this park in Captain Jeffries’ honour celebrates his more than three decades of service and the lasting impact he had on Cochrane,” said Stacey Loe, Executive Director of Community and Protective Services. “As families gather and neighbours connect here, the sign will help share his story with new generations and recognize how his contributions helped shape our community.”
Together, the park dedication and commemorative sign provide a lasting tribute to Captain Jeffries and recognize the role he played in the community’s history. The gathering also offered family members, colleagues and Town representatives an opportunity to remember his legacy and mark its place in a community space.
