(Cochrane, AB) – The Town of Cochrane invites residents and visitors to come together on September 30, 2026, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at The Station at Cochrane Crossing to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day.
The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a federal statutory day dedicated to acknowledging the history and legacy of residential schools and their lasting impacts on Indigenous communities.
The community gathering provides an opportunity to reflect, learn and hear from local Indigenous community members through intergenerational dancing and storytelling. Participants are invited to deepen their understanding of Indigenous cultures and histories and consider how they can contribute to reconciliation within our community.
“Truth and Reconciliation is a responsibility we all share. September 30 is an opportunity to honour Survivors, listen and learn from Indigenous voices, and reflect on how each of us can contribute to building stronger, more respectful relationships in our community.” says Matt Knox, Director of Social Development, Town of Cochrane. “Together, we hold space for truth, history and healing and commit to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.”
Presented in partnership with Route 22 Artist Collective Gallery, Wazin Ichinabi Ti, Cochrane Public Library, The Learning Circle and FCSS, the September 30 community gathering supports meaningful dialogue and collective healing.
Event highlights include:
- Raising of a tipi led by an Iyethka Elder
- Opening ceremony with prayer and smudge, followed by the raising of the Survivors’ Flag and a moment of silence
- Intergenerational dancing and drumming
- Bannock for the first 300 guests
- Community resources, including mental health supports from FCSS and Indigenous literature curated by Cochrane Public Library
All municipal facilities will be closed for the day, allowing staff and residents time to honour the legacy, and continue learning about the impact of residential schools
