Cochrane moves forward with James Walker Trail expansion following Council approval

James Walker Trail Stage 3

(Cochrane, AB) – After years of planning, the Town of Cochrane is moving ahead with the next phase of the James Walker Trail (JWT) expansion, following Council’s approval of the borrowing bylaw at the April 14 meeting. This marks a significant milestone, as work is set to begin on a major new corridor that will connect the north and south parts of town, reduce pressure on River Heights Drive and support Cochrane’s growth.

The project will be completed in two sections. The Town of Cochrane will begin construction on its 1.5 km portion in May 2025, with work expected to extend over two construction seasons. At the same time, Qualico Communities will start work on its 1 km section in Southbow Landing in June 2025, aiming to complete their portion by the end of the year.

“We’re excited to start the next phase of this project and bring this essential roadway to life for our community,” says Drew Hyndman, Executive Director of Development & Infrastructure Services, Town of Cochrane. “Qualico Communities has been a great partner, and together we’ll ensure this main corridor eases congestion, improves connectivity, and supports Cochrane’s growth for years to come.”

“Qualico Communities is committed to fulfilling its promise of completing its section of James Walker Trail in 2025, alongside the Town of Cochrane,” says Angela Yurkowski, Qualico Communities. “This is a great example of collaboration with our municipal partners, and growth paying for growth. We are excited that this new community brings on construction of this important infrastructure.”

The completion of this project will enhance connectivity between north and south Cochrane, reduce strain on existing roads and provide a critical transportation route for future development. By funding the project through off-site levies, the Town ensures that new development contributes to the infrastructure needed, minimizing the impact on existing taxpayers.
