The Town of Cochrane is setting a new standard for inclusive, age-friendly living with the launch of the age-friendly Cochrane initiative, a visionary plan to transform the community into a model of accessibility, social connection, and well-being for older adults. Grounded in the World Health Organization’s age-friendly cities framework, this initiative will reshape Cochrane’s infrastructure, services, and community programs to ensure older adults can live independently, stay engaged, and thrive in every aspect of daily life.
Cochrane’s population has surged over the past decade, with the number of adults aged 65 and older rising sharply from 10.1% in 2011 to 16.2% in 2021. Recognizing this demographic shift, the Town is dedicated to creating an environment where older adults can maintain their independence, actively engage in community life, and seamlessly access the services and support they need to thrive.
“As Cochrane grows, we have a responsibility to create a community where older adults thrive. Every resident should be able to move freely, stay socially connected, and access the resources they need to live with dignity and independence," says Matt Knox, Director of Social Development. "An age-friendly Cochrane means investing in accessible infrastructure, fostering meaningful social connections, and ensuring everyone has the opportunity to flourish."
The age-friendly Cochrane action plan prioritizes accessible public spaces, expanded housing and transportation options, and stronger social support networks. It also emphasizes improved healthcare access, inclusive communication, and increased opportunities for civic and economic participation. By integrating age-friendly design, expanding transit services, and fostering intergenerational engagement, Cochrane is building a more resilient and connected community.
To bring this vision to life, dedicated working groups will be established to drive progress on key initiatives. Community members will have the opportunity to get involved, with engagement opportunities shared in the coming months. The completion of the age-friendly action plan marks a significant milestone, positioning Cochrane to seek provincial recognition for its commitment to becoming an age-friendly community.
