Cochrane unveils vision for next-generation public transit to meet growing community needs

The Town of Cochrane is launching an innovative hybrid transit model that not only enhances reliability and accessibility but also reinforces the social fabric of our community. Building on five years of valuable lessons from the COLT On-Demand service, the new model integrates fixed routes along key corridors with on-request transit options to create a system designed for both predictability and flexibility.

“Public transit it plays an essential role in supporting those who rely on it every day,” said Matt Knox, Director of Social Development. “We recognize that today’s system serves a vital function for many, and our vision is to expand access so that, over the next five years, more residents can benefit from reliable, inclusive service. Our goal is to build a robust, fully actualized public transit system that not only supports economic vitality and enriches social engagement but also reflects the evolving needs and unique spirit of Cochrane.”

Since its launch in 2019, COLT has provided tens of thousands of rides and has grown to meet increasing demand. However, as Cochrane continues to expand, a more structured and community-oriented approach became essential. The comprehensive transit study, driven by extensive community engagement and expert analysis, identified frequency and reliability as top priorities – affirming that transit is key to fostering social cohesion and supporting local growth.

The hybrid model is designed to address today’s challenges while paving the way for a future-proof transit network. Fixed routes will deliver consistent service along high-demand corridors, while on-request service will continue to provide flexible options for areas that need it most. This balanced approach not only meets current needs but also sets the stage for a transition to a fully integrated public transit system by 2030.

“Cochrane’s vision for transit is about more than just schedules and routes,” Knox added. “It’s about connecting neighborhoods, sparking economic opportunities, and building a more inclusive, sustainable community. With this initiative, we are investing in our future and ensuring that our public transit system becomes a vibrant force that binds our community together.”

As planning and implementation move forward, the Town remains committed to keeping residents informed throughout the transition. Periodic updates and resources will be shared ahead of the launch to help riders navigate the changes. While this shift marks a major step forward, ongoing assessments and refinements will ensure the system continues to meet the needs of Cochrane’s growing population.

This evolution of transit is not just about service adjustments - it represents Cochrane’s commitment to smart growth, sustainability, and enhanced quality of life. The future of transit is here, and it’s designed for a stronger, more connected Cochrane.
