(Cochrane, AB) – Garmin Canada Inc., an affiliate of Garmin International, announced today the expansion of its Canadian headquarters in Cochrane, AB. Together with the Town of Cochrane and alongside the Government of Alberta, the company unveiled plans for the addition of a third floor to its existing building, which will make room for 200 new local science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) jobs. The expansion will nearly double Garmin’s employment in Cochrane and lays the groundwork for even more significant growth that would have the potential of bringing several hundred additional STEM jobs to Cochrane.
“Our office’s journey started in 1998 with four of us working out of a garage in Cochrane. It’s incredible to be announcing this expansion and to be welcoming more team members to join us.” said Jim Rooney, Managing Director of Garmin Canada. “We are grateful for Cochrane’s support and alignment with our long-term vision for future growth. I hear it from our associates everyday – there’s no better place to live, work and play.”
Garmin Canada, formerly Dynastream Innovations Inc., has been developing industry-leading technology for the fitness and outdoor industries for more than 20 years. They moved into their current building in 2018 and reached capacity in just over four years. This third-floor expansion is a result of continued investment and support from Garmin, coupled with a partnership between Cochrane, Springwood Developments, Garmin Canada and the province through the extension of the Community Revitalization Levy (CRL) program.
“Garmin Canada is a genuine Alberta startup success story, and we’re proud the company calls Cochrane home,” said Jeff Genung, Mayor of Cochrane. “The company attracts world-class talent, and Cochrane attracts world-class people. We are pleased to be working together to continue building this community as a technology hub.”
“The Cochrane community revitalization levy has been an incredible success for Cochrane and Albertans alike. Investment in an underutilized site has led to the creation of 200 new jobs and a 2,638% increase in taxable assessment growth. This $140 million in increased property values will go a long way to attract future investment and jobs into this vibrant and growing mid-sized city,” said Rebecca Schulz, Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs.
“I wanted to sincerely congratulate Garmin Canada on their announcement to expand their engineering facility. This is wonderful news for the Town of Cochrane that will create 200 technology-based jobs. One of the things that makes announcements like this possible is the revitalization levy. It has had a tremendous impact here in Cochrane, to boost investment and job creation. I'm encouraged to see such great work being done in our community,” said Peter Guthrie, Alberta’s Minister of Energy and MLA for Airdrie-Cochrane.
Construction of the third floor to the existing Garmin building in Cochrane’s core will begin in early Spring of this year. The new space is expected to open in the Spring of 2024.
