Following a notice of motion from council, the Town of Cochrane is making it easier for local businesses to expand and enhance their spaces, with improvements to its Temporary Outdoor Patio Program set to roll out June 1, 2026.
With the 2026 patio season underway, the Town continues to accept applications while preparing to introduce updated guidelines designed to streamline approvals, improve clarity and increase awareness of the program.
“Outdoor patios play an important role in bringing energy to our streets and supporting local businesses,” said Mayor Morgan Nagel. “By removing barriers and creating more opportunities for businesses to expand and invest in their spaces, we are helping build a vibrant and accessible community where friends and families make lifelong memories together.”
Building on this, Councillor Singh echoed the importance of creating spaces that bring people together, while emphasizing continuous improvement in how the Town supports local businesses.
“Enhancing programs like this reflects our commitment to improving how we deliver services to the business community,” said Councillor Singh. “By streamlining processes and improving access, we are making it easier for businesses to grow, while also supporting the kinds of spaces where residents and visitors can gather, connect and create lasting experiences.”
Launched in 2021, the Temporary Outdoor Patio Program allows businesses to set up seasonal patios from April to September without going through a full development permit process. This simplified approach helps businesses move quickly, with applications typically approved in just over a week.
The program has supported local business growth over the past several years, with some participants transitioning from temporary patios to permanent outdoor spaces. It also contributes to more vibrant streets and welcoming gathering places for residents and visitors.
Planned enhancements to the program include:
- Clearer, updated guidelines to simplify the application process
- Faster, coordinated internal reviews
- No application fees
- New online resources to help businesses apply with confidence
- Ongoing analysis of opportunities for improvement based on best practices across Canadian municipalities
The enhanced program aligns with Envision Cochrane 2050, supporting local economic development and streamlining processes to attract and retain businesses.
