During this evening’s regular Council meeting, Cochrane Town Council awarded and celebrated Don and Shirley Begg as the recipients of the esteemed 2024 Order of Cochrane.

Presented annually, the Order of Cochrane recognizes individuals whose commitment, vision, and leadership have left an enduring legacy within the community. Nominees are put forward by residents and selected by Council through a secret ballot process.

This year’s recipients, Don and Shirley Begg, were recognized for their lasting contributions to Canadian culture and their long-standing ties to Cochrane. As internationally acclaimed sculptors and founders of Studio West Ltd., the Beggs have created life-size and heroic-scale bronze monuments for public spaces across North America. Their work reflects themes of heritage, history, and human connection, and their studio in Cochrane has become a hub for creativity, craftsmanship, and collaboration. Through their art, the Beggs have helped share Canadian stories with the world while contributing to the cultural identity of Cochrane.

“Don and Shirley have elevated Cochrane’s reputation on the national and international stage through their extraordinary work,” said Mayor Jeff Genung. “Their impact on the cultural identity of Cochrane is profound, and we are proud to honour their legacy with the 2024 Order of Cochrane.”
