(Cochrane, AB) – At Monday’s Regular Council Meeting, Cochrane Administration received Council’s endorsement to advance the event permit process for the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 Triathlon, one of the world’s premier endurance events.

With ongoing construction in Harmony making the previous location unavailable, Platinum Racing Events, organizers of IRONMAN 70.3 Calgary, have selected Cochrane as the ideal new host community — offering stunning scenery, a welcoming spirit and great amenities for athletes and visitors alike.

More than 1,100 athletes, 500 spectators and 300 volunteers from 26 countries are expected to take part, contributing an estimated $1.6 million to Cochrane’s local economy through hotel stays, dining, shopping and more.

“An event of this calibre brings a major economic opportunity for Cochrane’s business community and reinforces Cochrane as a premier destination for recreation and tourism,” says Town of Cochrane Mayor, Morgan Nagel. “We are doing everything we can to make sure any disruptions are kept to a minimum and everyone knows what to expect when road or traffic changes happen.”

Set to take place July 25–26, 2026, the event will feature:

  • 1.9 km swim at Ghost Lake.
  • 90 km bike course through scenic rural roads north of Cochrane.
  • 21.1 km run along Cochrane’s renowned pathway network and Bow River corridor.
  • Event headquarters and the finish line at the Historic Cochrane Ranche.
  • A kids fun run, athlete expo, vendor market and more.

“The IRONMAN 70.3 is about more than just the race — it’s a weekend-long celebration of fitness, community, and everything that makes Cochrane special,” says Tom Bamford, Event Organizer, Platinum Racing. “Athletes and their families will have the chance to experience Cochrane’s vibrant downtown, enjoy local parks, trails and outdoor spaces, and be part of the festival atmosphere that makes this event truly unique.”

As planning continues, the Town of Cochrane will work closely with event organizers to ensure residents are kept informed through regular updates and advance notice of any traffic or road impacts. The Town looks forward to welcoming athletes, families and visitors to Cochrane for an unforgettable experience.
