(Cochrane, AB) – As families prepare for a new school year, the Cochrane and Area Family Resource Network (FRN), in partnership with Staples, the Kiwanis Club of Cochrane and the Cochrane Food Bank, is once again offering its annual Backpack Program to help ensure local students have the supplies they need to succeed.
The program provides eligible students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 with backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies, helping ease the financial pressure many families experience during the back-to-school season. The Backpack Program’s tech program will run from August 17 to September 4, 2026, and has limited quantities.
"Every child deserves to begin the school year feeling confident and ready to learn," says Kim Krawec, Manager of FCSS, Town of Cochrane. "The Backpack Program helps remove financial barriers for local families, and we're incredibly grateful to our community partners and donors whose generosity makes this program possible year after year."
Applications for the 2026 Backpack Program will be accepted in person at the Family Resource Network from August 17 to September 18, 2026, while supplies last.
To be eligible, families must provide:
- Proof of enrolment in a Cochrane or West Rocky View County school.
- A valid Cochrane Connect Card or a Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) Notice of Credit (formerly the GST/HST credit).
Residents who do not have the required documentation can book an appointment with an FRN Resource Worker to discuss eligibility.
Community members can also help support the program by making a monetary donation. Donations are accepted at:
- Staples (40 Quarry Street E.)
- Family Resource Network (127 First Avenue W.)
- FCSS (#1, 209 Second Avenue W.)
Every donation goes directly toward helping local students begin the school year equipped for success.
