With the potential for drying conditions ahead, the Town of Cochrane is proactively advancing its community FireSmart Program, taking important steps to safeguard residents, homes and natural areas from the threat of wildfires.
Building on the momentum of Emergency Preparedness Week, Cochrane is reinforcing its commitment to resilience, safety and long-term wildfire prevention. Phase two of Cochrane’s wildfire mitigation work is now underway, with targeted fuel management and risk reduction strategies focused on high-priority areas. Contractors will complete final cleanup efforts in Bow Ridge, Crawford Ranch, Riviera and the Lofts on the Bow. Additional work will also take place in Cochrane Heights, above the Cochrane Ranche, where special care will be taken to protect the Grandfather Tree area — a cherished community space that will remain safeguarded and fire-resilient.
The FireSmart Program, launched in February, has made significant progress across Cochrane. Guided by FireSmart Alberta’s seven principles, the program empowers residents with practical actions such as clearing combustible debris, managing vegetation and using fire-resistant building materials to reduce wildfire risk and strengthen neighbourhood safety.
“Every action we take today builds a stronger, safer tomorrow,” said Cochrane Fire Chief Shawn Polley. “This is about more than just clearing brush—it’s about standing together as a community and taking meaningful steps to protect what matters most. FireSmart is how we take control, prepare and build a Cochrane that’s ready for anything.”
As wildfire seasons grow longer and more severe, Cochrane continues to lead by example—combining expert planning with community engagement to foster a culture of preparedness and sustainability. However, lasting resilience depends on the collective efforts of everyone.
