Cochrane invests in the future with strategic land acquisition on the Bow River

The Town of Cochrane has finalized the purchase of a 26-acre parcel of land from Rocky View County for $5 million, securing control over a legacy site on the Bow River. The acquisition, approved by Council, represents a bold step toward preserving Cochrane’s identity and shaping a future guided by community values.

“This is the last piece of undeveloped riverfront property in Cochrane,” said Mayor Jeff Genung. “By securing this land, we are ensuring that we shape this space in a way that truly reflects the priorities, values and vision of our community. This is about building our future, together.”

“This is the last piece of undeveloped riverfront property in Cochrane,” said Mayor Jeff Genung. “By securing this land, we are ensuring that we shape this space in a way that truly reflects the priorities, values and vision of our community. This is about building our future, together.”

Located adjacent to the Bow RiversEdge Campground, Jim Uffelman Memorial Park and the growing community of Greystone, the site was previously operated as a gravel pit, and more recently as highway maintenance facility, including salt storage. Based upon these previous uses, the property will require a remediation plan that will be approved by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas prior to any future uses of the property. Environmental site monitoring and remediation efforts are anticipated to commence following the acquisition of the lands.

“This acquisition reinforces Council’s commitment to our community aspirations, said Mike Derricott, Chief Administrative Officer. “It positions us to proactively plan for livability, sustainability, and a vibrant economy -all driven by the voices and values of our residents.”

The purchase supports Cochrane’s long-term goals of preserving open spaces, enhancing livability, and investing in future public amenities and infrastructure. Future planning will be guided by meaningful public engagement to ensure the site reflects the community’s needs and vision.

This acquisition marks the beginning of a broader conversation about Cochrane’s future- one shaped by the people who call this community home.
