Cochrane, AB – The Town of Cochrane and the Cochrane RCMP are calling on the community to come together to address the recent increase in vandalism incidents.
Cochrane is known for its vast open spaces, natural beauty, striking landmarks, and outdoor amenities, which are highly valued by residents and visitors alike. Protecting these areas is a top priority, and community support is essential to avoid the financial burden on taxpayers for maintaining Cochrane’s charm and cleanliness.
“We are seeing the effects of increased vandalism in our community, from damage to the Men of Vision statue to public facilities and increased graffiti," said Lisa Almond, Executive Director of Community and Protective Services, Cochrane. "Our staff is working diligently to repair these areas and restore them to their original state, but this comes at a cost. We urge everyone in the community to stay alert and report any suspicious activities. By doing so, you help protect our town and ensure it remains a beautiful and welcoming place for all.”
When vandalism occurs, it diverts essential resources from maintaining and enhancing public spaces. Time and money that could be spent on community improvements are instead used for repairs to graffiti and damaged property.
“To understand and address the root causes of vandalism, we will initiate community conversations and work together to find community-driven solutions,” added Almond.
Vandalism is a criminal activity with serious consequences. "We take these incidents very seriously and need the community's help to address them," said Constable Clayton Gelinas, Cochrane RCMP. "Reporting vandalism not only helps us catch those responsible but also deters future incidents. Together, we can keep Cochrane safe and clean."
