Description

As part of the Highway 1A Improvements project and realignment of 4th Ave to 5th Ave, a new retaining wall has been constructed to support the updated traffic flow plan and connectivity in our community. The retaining wall provides an exciting opportunity for placemaking; serving as gateway to Cochrane, welcoming visitors and residents and strengthening our identity through a modern take on western heritage. 

Background

As part of the Highway 1A Improvements project, 4th Avenue has been realigned to 5th Avenue. The “S” curve realignment directs traffic onto Fifth Avenue and all the way through to Griffin Road. This realignment includes the construction of a retaining wall, stormwater pond and surrounding pathways. 

How will this project benefit the community?

This project will serve as a gateway, welcoming all to our community. Preserving our unique identity and creating a strong sense of place. The wall and new realignment will enhance community connectivity and traffic flow and provide new pathways for all to enjoy.

This supports Council's strategic priority of identity as we commit to preserving our unique identity and western heritage and planning for a sense of place. Cochrane's unique and charming identity distinguishes our community in the region. As we welcome new neighbours, preserving our identity is crucial to maintaining our desirability.

Round off your summer by joining us for the 58th Annual Cochrane Labour Day Parade!
Grab your lawn chairs, claim your spot, and enjoy pre-parade entertainment starting at 9:00 a.m.

The parade begins at 10:00 a.m., with a variety of businesses & groups strutting their stuff with eye-catching floats down 1st Street and Railway Street.

Please note that road barricades will begin going up throughout downtown at 8:00 a.m. sharp, so please plan accordingly.

A Beaded Tribute For Remembrance

As part of the Weaving Connections: Indigenous Culture, History, and Healing Initiative, join us for a special two-part workshop to create a beaded poppy with artist Amber Boyd. This program is a beautiful way to honor veterans for Remembrance Day while learning the traditional art of beading.

All materials are included, giving you a chance to learn the techniques and create a meaningful keepsake. Amber will guide you through the process, providing all the instruction and support you need to complete your own stunning piece of art. This workshop is a unique opportunity to connect with a traditional craft and pay tribute to those who have served.

This program is made possible with the generous support of the Government of Alberta through its Ethnocultural Grant Program.

Water accumulating on the street? 

You may be located near a trap low. Trap lows are a part of the stormwater storage system, allowing water to pool on roads, lanes and in greenspaces.

It may appear that the street is flooding up to and, sometimes, including some of your driveway or lawn. It is not.

If the water does not drain within 24 hours after rainfall, please contact Cochrane Operations at 403-851-2590.
