Cochrane Fire Services, in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), is proud to take part in Fire Prevention Week 2025, running October 5–11. This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” focuses on keeping residents safe while using one of today’s most common power sources.
From smartphones and laptops to e-bikes, power tools, headphones, and even children’s toys, lithium-ion batteries power the devices we rely on every day. But if damaged or misused, they can overheat, catch fire, or even explode.
“Lithium-ion batteries are part of our daily lives, but with that convenience comes responsibility,” said Chief Polley. “Fire Prevention Week is a great opportunity to remind people of the simple steps they can take to protect themselves, their families, and their homes.”
Cochrane Fire Services encourages residents to:
- Buy only certified products that meet safety standards
- Use manufacturer-approved chargers and follow safe charging practices
- Recycle old batteries properly at facilities listed on call2recycle.org
Throughout October, firefighters will be out in the community sharing important safety information. Highlights include:
- October 4 – Firehouse Subs meet & greet: Stop in for a casual visit with Cochrane firefighters, enjoy a meal, and pick up lithium-ion battery safety resources in a relaxed setting.
- October 6 – Coffee with the crew at Tim Hortons: Connect with firefighters over coffee and learn more about Fire Prevention and lithium-ion battery safety.
- October 7 – Mom’s night out at Ascend Pediatrics (6 – 8 p.m.): A focused discussion on fire prevention in the home, designed to help families stay safe.
- October 10 – Seniors on the Bow presentation: A fire prevention and lithium-ion safety talk tailored for seniors, followed by a Q&A session (time TBD).
- October 11 – Station 151 open house (10 a.m.–2 p.m.): Tour the firehall, meet the crews and learn practical tips to keep your home safe. Families can also book personalized home safety visits, while kids can enter a colouring contest for the chance to win a behind-the-scenes firehall tour.
In addition, fire safety tips will be shared throughout the month on the Town’s social media channels to help residents stay safe at home.
