Administration provides report on future utility infrastructure considerations

(Cochrane, AB) – At yesterday evening’s Council meeting, Administration provided Council with an overview of potential future utility infrastructure projects and long-term planning considerations related to the future capacity, reliability and redundancy of Cochrane’s water and wastewater systems.

The overview provides an early look at potential infrastructure considerations as Cochrane’s existing systems approach capacity. It also provides Council with information to consider when discussing future infrastructure priorities and financial planning.

The information presented outlines approximately $268 million in potential utility infrastructure projects between 2027 and 2035, above and beyond the Town's regular infrastructure spending. This includes expanding the existing water treatment plant, constructing a new water treatment plant, upgrading the water network and twinning the wastewater forcemain that discharges to the City of Calgary.

"This report provides Council with an overview of the long-term considerations facing our infrastructure with respect to both servicing growth and ensuring reliability," said Adam Sullo, Executive Director of Engineering & Planning. "By planning ahead, the Town can explore options, evaluate future priorities and provide Council with the information needed to make informed decisions about Cochrane’s infrastructure and financial future."

Administration noted that these potential projects are being considered well in advance, giving the Town time to assess options, explore funding opportunities and return to Council with recommendations as planning progresses.

Future funding decisions and project approvals will be considered through future budgets and Council reports as individual projects advance.
