(Cochrane, AB) –The Town of Cochrane regrets to share that the Grandfather Tree, a long-standing and much-loved community landmark, fell last night during a windstorm.
Known for its rich history and natural beauty, the Grandfather Tree, estimated to be around 300 years old, has long been a beloved feature of Cochrane’s landscape. In recent years, measures were taken to protect the tree and its surroundings, including fencing installed in late fall 2024 to address concerns about foot traffic, soil erosion and root damage. Despite these efforts, the strong winds proved too much for the aging tree.
“The Grandfather Tree held a special place in the hearts of our community,” said Lisa Almond, Executive Director of Community Safety & Wellbeing. “Its loss is deeply felt, as it stood for generations as a gathering place and a symbol of pride and connection for so many in Cochrane. As we reflect on its significance, we are carefully exploring meaningful ways to repurpose the wood and nurture new life through seed propagation, ensuring its legacy continues to inspire future generations.”
The Town’s Parks Department is actively working to stabilize the area and mitigate soil erosion. The tree will not be removed at this time. Residents are reminded to respect the fencing and signage to ensure the safety of the site.
Ideas and suggestions for commemorating the Grandfather Tree can be emailed to community.services@cochrane.ca.
