Cochrane establishes municipal policing committee to strengthen community safety

Policing Committee

The Town of Cochrane is strengthening its commitment to public safety and community collaboration with the establishment of the Cochrane Municipal Policing Committee. Created under Bylaw 03/2025, this new initiative provides residents with a direct role in shaping local policing priorities, fostering stronger connections between the community, Town Council and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

“This is a defining moment for Cochrane,” said Mayor Jeff Genung. The establishment of the Municipal Policing Committee ensures public safety and builds trust, said Mayor Jeff Genung. “By working closely with the RCMP and directly addressing community concerns, the well-being of residents is at the forefront in the delivery of policing to our community. This helps in strengthening Cochrane as a safe and inclusive place for all.”

The committee will act as a critical liaison between the public and law enforcement, ensuring transparency and accountability in policing decisions. Comprising one Town Councillor and six residents, the committee will also include the potential for a youth representative (aged 16-18), recognizing the importance of engaging young people in public safety discussions. Members will serve three-year terms, ensuring consistency and long-term strategic vision.

“This committee is more than just oversight - it’s about action and collaboration,” said Jay Judin, Director of Community Safety. “We are creating a proactive framework where residents, elected officials and law enforcement work together to identify challenges, develop solutions, and shape the future of policing in Cochrane. This initiative will not only enhance safety but also foster trust, accountability and meaningful engagement across the community.”

The committee will provide strategic input on policing matters and ensure that community concerns are addressed in a timely and effective manner. Through this initiative, Cochrane is taking a proactive approach to public safety, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and community-led decision-making.

This volunteer opportunity allows residents to actively contribute to local policing priorities and public safety initiatives. Ideal candidates will demonstrate integrity, objectivity and a strong commitment to community well-being. Applications are due by March 17, and any Cochrane resident meeting the eligibility criteria is encouraged to apply. Qualified applicants will be appointed by Council upon conclusion of the selection process.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about the committee’s work and explore opportunities to get involved. For more information, visit Cochrane.ca/committees.
