Cochrane, AB – To protect one of Cochrane’s most beloved landmarks, the Parks Department is installing temporary snow fencing around the Grandfather Tree while a permanent solution is being explored. This measure comes in response to increasing concerns about the effects of foot traffic, soil erosion, and damage to the tree’s roots, all of which have begun to jeopardize its health and the stability of the surrounding landscape.
The Grandfather Tree holds both cultural and environmental significance and has long been a beloved gathering place for the community. However, increasing visitation and physical damage to the area have raised concerns about the tree’s long-term survival.
"Protecting the Grandfather Tree is a priority, not only because of its deep community significance but also due to its vital role in our local ecosystem," said Michelle Delorme, Director of Parks & Active Living. "The temporary fencing will help protect the tree’s roots, prevent further erosion, and allow us time to explore a permanent solution to safeguard its health and the surrounding landscape."
The temporary fencing will protect the tree’s roots and prevent further erosion of the surrounding slope. While visitors will still be able to enjoy the tree and the area, the fencing will help ensure that the roots remain undisturbed, allowing the tree to thrive and the landscape to recover.
The Town asks all visitors to respect the temporary fencing and refrain from climbing on the tree roots. These actions will support the long-term preservation of the Grandfather Tree and ensure it remains a vital part of Cochrane’s natural heritage.
"We appreciate the community’s cooperation," added Delorme. "Together, we can ensure this remarkable tree continues to stand as a symbol of strength and connection for years to come."
