(Cochrane, AB) – The Government of Alberta has approved funding to begin engineering and design work for a future twinned Highway 22 bridge over the Bow River, moving the project into the next phase of provincial planning.

While construction funding has not yet been committed, advancing engineering represents an important step toward addressing long-standing traffic congestion and safety concerns along one of Cochrane’s key transportation corridors.

“The Bow River bridge on Highway 22 is a critical connection for Cochrane and the broader regional economy,” said Mayor Nagel, Town of Cochrane. “We're very pleased to see the Alberta government is advancing this engineering work and taking a step toward ultimate construction.”

Highway 22 serves as a major north-south corridor supporting local travel, regional commuting, and commercial traffic. The existing crossing has long been identified as a constraint to traffic flow and a growing pressure point as Cochrane continues to experience rapid population growth.

“For too long, projects like this were talked about instead of getting built. Our government is getting it done. We’re advancing this project to improve safety, reduce congestion, and deliver the infrastructure a growing Cochrane needs,” said Devin Dreeshen, Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors

For many years, the Town of Cochrane has advocated for strategic transportation investments to support community growth and improve regional mobility. This includes continued engagement with the Province of Alberta through formal correspondence, meetings, and briefing materials focused on the Highway 22 corridor and long-term infrastructure needs.

The advancement of engineering work aligns with Cochrane’s transportation and growth management priorities, which aim to improve safety, reduce congestion, and strengthen regional connections that support economic development.

Engineering and design will help define future project scope, technical requirements, and cost considerations. Decisions regarding construction timing and funding will be determined by the Province through future capital planning processes.

The Town of Cochrane looks forward to continued collaboration with the Province of Alberta as planning for the project advances.
