(Cochrane, AB) – Over the next week, Cochrane will see the commencement of essential infrastructure work aimed at enhancing travel experiences and improving vital corridors in the core of our community. This includes the intersection closure at Centre Avenue and First Street, the paving work on Highway 1A, and a voluntary water conservation program.
Intersection closure at Centre Avenue & First Street:
Effective today (August 30th), the intersection at Centre Avenue and First Street will be closed to allow for the required underground utility improvements work. The closure is anticipated to last for approximately four weeks.
Recognizing the significance of this intersection as a crucial corridor in our community, Administration wants to assure residents that the enhancements being implemented are intended to provide improved travel experiences in the long run.
"Prioritizing the safety of motorists, pedestrians, students, and construction workers above all, we acknowledge the effects of the adjusted intersection closure date and empathize with any resulting inconvenience,” says Drew Hyndman, Executive Director Development & Infrastructure Services. “While our initial intention was to ensure readiness before school, unforeseen challenges arose requiring additional work to complete the stormwater pipeline installation along First Street East. Substantial progress has been achieved over the summer and improvements to the roadway will benefit the community for years to come.”
This closure also includes the tie-in of a significant water main. From September 3-6, residents are asked to follow voluntary water conservation measures to help retain reservoir levels while this work is completed. This includes:
- Water flower beds and vegetable gardens using a watering can or hose nozzle with trigger control.
- Avoid using sprinklers.
- Refrain from washing vehicles, sidewalks, windows or siding.
These measures contribute to conserving water and safeguarding Cochrane’s water supply.
Highway 1A Paving Work:
Paving work will be underway on Highway 1A this weekend, as crews work to complete this work and support the flow of traffic on this key corridor. While acknowledging potential route impacts, motorists are encouraged to consider alternate routes to access Historic Downtown, the Labour Day parade, and the Cochrane Lions Rodeo. Entry from South Cochrane over the Jack Tennant Memorial Bridge or via Griffin Road off Highway 22 are recommended alternatives.
Back-to-School:
In preparation for the back-to-school season amid ongoing construction, Cochrane prioritizes the safety and well-being of students and parents. Proactive measures have been taken to ensure a smooth transition into the academic year:
- Traffic signals along HWY 1A and 5th Avenue have been retimed to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion.
- Close collaboration with local schools enables coordinated construction schedules, minimizing disruptions during drop-off and pick-up times.
Construction crews are dedicated to enhancing the community while minimizing disruptions for students, parents, and residents. Motorists are urged to plan ahead and leave plenty of time, exercise vigilance around school zones and bus routes and follow posted speed limits to ensure the safety of children on their way to school. Throughout construction, Emergency Services are actively engaged in regular project updates to ensure that emergency access remains unhampered, as public safety remains our foremost priority.
Despite the ongoing construction activities, Cochrane’s local businesses remain fully operational and eager to serve the community.
Detour routes and clearly marked signage will be in place to assist residents and visitors in navigating around the temporary closure. Weather-dependent schedules may lead to changes, and everyone is kindly asked to follow posted detours and instructions provided by flaggers.
