Town of Cochrane and Big Hill Cycle host free bike registration event

(Cochrane, AB) - The Town of Cochrane Community Peace Officers, in collaboration with Big Hill Cycle, are hosting a one-day Bike Index registration initiative to help residents protect their bicycles, support theft prevention and strengthen community safety.

Residents are invited to bring their bicycles to Riverfront Park in Riverview on June 27 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., where Community Peace Officers and Big Hill Cycle staff will be available to help complete Bike Index registrations.

Bike Index is a free, voluntary bicycle registration database used by bike owners, bicycle retailers and law enforcement agencies across North America. By registering a bike, owners create a record that can help identify and recover it if it is ever lost or stolen.

If a registered bike is stolen, the owner can update its status in Bike Index. Should the bike be recovered by police or searched by a potential buyer, the database will identify it as stolen and notify those checking the serial number, helping to deter theft and improve recovery rates.

“Bicycle theft impacts residents, families, and the overall sense of safety in our community,” says Flynn Scott, Manager, Municipal Enforcement. “Bike Index provides a simple way for residents to protect their property while helping Municipal Enforcement identify owners and return recovered bicycles faster.”

Community Peace Officers and Big Hill Cycle staff will be available throughout the event to help residents complete the registration process and obtain a registration sticker for their bikes.

Residents are encouraged to bring their bicycle and any identifying information they have available, including the bike’s serial number, make, model, colour, unique markings or photos. A few minutes of prevention can help improve the chances of recovering a bicycle if it is ever lost or stolen.
