All businesses operating in Cochrane need a valid business licence, whether the licence is temporary or annual.
Applying for a NEW business licence
Due to the current volume of applications received, submissions will take approximately 5-7 business days to process.
Depending on your business type and location, you may also need a development permit or other municipal, provincial or federal approvals. Use BizPaL to find a complete list of requirements.
How to apply:
- complete the business licence application form
- book a fire inspection if you operate from a physical location or storefront
- submit your application and pay the required fee
Once we receive your application and payment, we will issue your business licence certificate.
You must post your annual certificate at your business location or carry your licence card and show it when requested.
Fees and payment
You can pay your business licence fee in one of the following ways:
- online through eServices using a credit card (invoice number required).
Make a payment online - in person at most banks or financial institutions (customer ID required)
Please note: under the Business Licence Bylaw (PDF), outstanding invoices after Feb. 1 are subject to a $30 flat-rate penalty.
Bylaws for businesses
All businesses located or operating in Cochrane must hold a current business licence, as per the Business Licence Bylaw 22/2018. In addition, all business must comply with the following bylaws:
- Dangerous Goods Bylaw 02/2006, which deals with the transportation of dangerous goods
- Snow Removal Bylaw 01/2009, which states that business owner are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks within 48 hours of snowfall
- Noise Control Bylaw 16/2011
