The Town of Cochrane and Rocky View County are launching a joint review of the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre and Cochrane Arena — two facilities they co-own and that are operated by the Spray Lake Sawmills Recreation Society (SLS).
The review will look at building condition, how the facilities are used and funded, and what investments may be needed in the years ahead. It builds on discussions that began in 2025 between the municipalities and the SLS Society.
“Cochrane’s recreation facilities play a vital role in the health and quality of life of our residents,” says Councillor Tara McFadden. “By working together with Rocky View County and our community partners, we are taking a proactive approach to understanding the long-term needs of these facilities and ensuring they continue to serve residents for years to come.”
The review covers three areas:
- Building condition and long-term maintenance needs
- Facility use, programming, and financial operations
- Reporting and accountability under the current operating agreement
"Rocky View County is committed to responsible stewardship of these public assets," says Reeve Sunny Samra. "This review will give both municipalities the information we need to make sound decisions and support recreation services for our communities over the long term."
An independent consultant will carry out the work in phases, starting in April 2026. Findings will be presented to both Councils in Q4 2026. Facility operations and programming will continue as normal throughout the process.
Residents can review the Town of Cochrane Council report to learn more about the project.
Additional updates will be shared as they become available. Residents with questions can contact community.services@cochrane.ca.
