Town of Cochrane working to support residents as commuter transit service changes

(Cochrane, AB.) - The Town of Cochrane is informing residents that the privately operated On-It commuter transit service between Cochrane and Calgary will be discontinued, effective as early as June 1, 2026.

This change will affect approximately 50 daily riders who currently rely on the service.

In response, the Town is taking practical steps to explore whether commuter service could continue through a private-sector model. This includes reaching out to potential operators, sharing relevant information, and assessing whether there is a viable path forward for service in Cochrane.

“We know this service matters to residents who rely on it to access work, school, and other opportunities in Calgary,” said Matt Knox, Director, Social Development, Community Services. “The Town is actively exploring whether a private-sector option could continue commuter service in Cochrane. At the same time, we want to be clear that we are not pursuing a municipally operated replacement.”

The Town reviewed the feasibility of a municipally operated commuter service and determined that the financial and operating requirements would make that approach unsustainable at this time.

The Town will continue its outreach in the coming weeks and will share updates with the community if a viable private-sector opportunity is identified. Residents who currently use the service are encouraged to begin planning for alternative transportation options as the transition approaches.

The Town remains committed to supporting residents through this transition and to working within its role and resources to help identify practical options.
