Cochrane, AB – At approximately 7:20 p.m. on December 3, Cochrane Fire Services responded to a significant structure fire in Rivercrest, south Cochrane. The fire involved two under-construction homes, which were fully engulfed upon arrival. The flames also threatened an occupied home to the east and another under-construction home to the west.
Thanks to a swift and coordinated response, firefighters contained the blaze, preventing significant spread to nearby properties. The occupied home sustained moderate damage, but no injuries were reported to residents or responders. Unfortunately, the two under-construction homes were a total loss.
Cochrane Fire Services received vital assistance from Rocky View County Fire Services, which provided three fire engines, and the RCMP, who ensured scene safety and traffic control. Cochrane’s Roads and Water and Wastewater departments also supported the operation, ensuring safe site access and a reliable water supply despite slippery conditions caused by freezing temperatures.
“Cool temperatures created extremely slippery conditions on-site, adding complexity to an already dynamic situation,” said Cochrane Fire Chief, Shawn A.C. Polley. “Despite these challenges, our crews and partners worked diligently and safely to manage the incident and protect the community.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Cochrane Fire Services.
Cochrane Fire Services thanks the Rivercrest community for their patience and cooperation during the response. This incident highlights the importance of fire safety, particularly in winter and near construction zones.
Residents are reminded to avoid the area as crews continue clean-up efforts and monitor the site for safety.
