Cochrane transit moves forward with fixed-route service

Transit

Following Council’s endorsement of a hybrid public transit model, Cochrane will launch three new fixed-routes on August 18. The new transit system design comes after the 2024 public engagement, technical assessment of Cochrane’s current transit system and recommendations based on best practice research.

Each route has been strategically planned to serve high-demand corridors, with clearly marked stops and regular schedules to ensure predictable, consistent travel. Whether commuting to work, visiting the rec centre, or running daily errands, riders will benefit from a more connected and convenient transit experience.

The new fixed-routes launching August 18 include:

  • Route 1: Sunset Ridge → Downtown → SLS Centre
  • Route 2: Heritage Hills → Heartland → Downtown → Cochrane Heights → Downtown
  • Route 3: Fireside → SLS Centre → Downtown

“Our focus is on making transit more convenient, reliable and responsive to the needs of our residents,” said Matt Knox, Director of Social Development. “This is about more than buses and routes — it’s about improving quality of life, reducing barriers, and connecting people to the places and services that matter most.”

The current on-request transit service will remain in place to ensure continued access for neighbourhoods not yet included in the fixed-route network. Further improvements and expansion of the fixed-route network is planned to occur as construction progresses in our growing neighbourhoods, including Sunset Ridge (north), Heritage Hills (east), Glenbow, Greystone, and Fireside (west).

Starting August 18 until September 1, Cochrane residents can enjoy free rides on all fixed-routes during this introductory period. The official launch with regular fares will follow on September 2.

The Town will continue to refine and improve service through ongoing monitoring, rider feedback, and performance data. Work is also underway to improve transit stop accessibility throughout Cochrane, with upgrades such as improved platforms, signage, and shelters being prioritized based on need.
