(Cochrane, AB) –The Town of Cochrane is once again sharing its commitment to supporting local seniors through the Cochrane Seniors Property Tax Support Program. This initiative offers eligible seniors a rebate of up to $500 on their municipal property taxes. Available since 2006, this long-valued program helps low-income seniors ease the financial pressures of homeownership and continue living independently in the community.
“The Seniors Property Tax Support Program is just one of the many impactful ways we support and care for seniors in Cochrane,” says Kim Krawec, Manager of Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). “As the cost of living continues to rise, this program provides important financial support to eligible seniors.”
To qualify, applicants must be 60 years of age or older, own and reside in their primary residence within Cochrane, and not own any additional properties. Applicants must also meet income thresholds established by the Alberta Seniors Benefit Program, with a maximum annual income of $34,770 for single applicants or $56,820 for couples.
The 2026 program is now open. New applicants are required to book an appointment with FCSS staff by calling 403-851-2250. Returning applicants can conveniently drop into the FCSS office to complete their application. All applicants must provide their 2025 Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) Notice of Assessment (NOA), and all property owners listed on the title must apply together and sign the application. The deadline to apply is December 31, 2026.
In addition to this municipal support, seniors aged 65 and older may also qualify for the Government of Alberta Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program, which allows homeowners to defer all or a portion of their property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan—providing even more flexibility and financial relief.
