Cochrane supports seniors with property tax rebate

The Town of Cochrane is reaffirming its commitment to supporting local seniors through the Cochrane Seniors Property Tax Support Program, which offers eligible seniors a rebate of up to $500 on their municipal property taxes. This long-standing initiative, available since 2006, helps low-income seniors manage the financial burden of homeownership and remain in their communities.

"The Seniors Property Tax Support Program is an important way we can provide direct financial relief to Cochrane seniors,” says Kim Krawec, Manager of Cochrane Family and Community Support Services (FCSS). “This is a critical program that helps low-income seniors maintain their housing amidst rising costs."

To qualify, applicants must be 60 years or older, own and reside in their primary residence within Cochrane and not own any other properties. They must also meet the income guidelines set out by the Alberta Seniors Benefit Program, with a maximum annual income of $33,410 for single applicants or $54,640 for couples.

The 2025 program is now open. New applicants must book an appointment with FCSS staff by calling 403-851-2250, while returning applicants can drop into the FCSS office to complete their application. All applicants must provide their 2024 Revenue Canada Income Tax Notice of Assessment (NOA), and all property owners listed on the title must apply together and sign the application. The deadline for applications is December 31, 2025.

Additionally, seniors aged 65 and older may be eligible for the Government of Alberta Seniors Property Tax Deferral Program, which allows them to defer all or a portion of their property taxes through a low-interest home equity loan.
