This program is open to ages 6 and up. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to assist with assembly. It’s a unique opportunity to learn practical skills, connect with Indigenous traditions, and celebrate cultural heritage.

Mitford Park is a 34-hectare regional park located along the north bank of the Bow River. The park includes a covered outdoor stage, pedestrian/cycling pathway along the Bow River, ball diamonds, soccer/rugby field, skateboard facility, ponds and a seasonal washroom. The major event here is the Canada Day concert, held on July 1.
Skating:
Once the pond ices over and is safe for skating, the “thin ice” signs will be removed, allowing residents to enjoy this beautiful amenity. The rink often opens in pre-season condition, when the ice is skateable but not quite ready for our equipment. Once it’s safe for our operators, the ice-surfacing machine will keep this treasure up and running as long as weather conditions permit.
- Lights are on until 10 p.m. each evening.
Fishing:
The pond is stocked each year with trout for fishing, in partnership with the Alberta Conservation Association, and is a favourite spot for kids.
- Anglers 13 years old and younger are allowed to use bait and keep one trout per day.
- All other anglers 14 years and older must release their catch and use single barbless hooks on their lures or flies.
- Absolutely no bait is allowed for anglers 14 years and older.
- A fishing licence is required for anyone 16 years and older.
Night fishing and ice fishing are not permitted.
The Mitford Park ball diamond rehabilitation will provide an update to Mitford Park ball diamonds to create optimal conditions for play through the busy season.
Cochrane’s ball diamond rehabilitation program
Cochrane maintains 13 ball diamonds that see heavy use from April to October. These diamonds are booked seven days a week for recreational and minor league play, which means regular care is essential to keep fields in good condition.
To support this work, the Town launched the Ball Diamond Lifecycle Program in 2025. Each year, two diamonds will be selected for rehabilitation based on their condition. This planned, ongoing work helps prevent deterioration and avoids costly one-time repairs.
About the Mitford ball diamond
Mitford Park Ball Diamond is the focus for 2026 and will receive its first full rehabilitation since it was built. While minor shale top-ups have taken place over the years, no complete renewal has been done. The shale surface has broken down over time, leading to uneven footing and less safe playing conditions. A full rehabilitation will restore the field and support safe, enjoyable play for our local ball teams.
This project reflects Cochrane’s commitment to supporting active, connected and vibrant community life by caring for the places where residents gather, play and compete.

Access by the parking lot at the west end of West Rock Rd. The pathway through Mitford Park is connected to the 70+ km pathway system.
Ice Skating
Outdoor skating areas are established when weather conditions allow. When cold weather permits, Parks staff work to build and maintain ice so they can be enjoyed for skating throughout the season. Lights are on nightly until 10 p.m.
