Anyone who’s worked on a building project knows inspections are a crucial component of safety and compliance.
With the current COVID-19 response requiring physical distancing, Town Safety Codes Officers have figured out a way to virtually inspect building, electrical, gas and plumbing work to avoid undue delays and keep themselves and the public safe.
The Safety Codes Council of Alberta (SCC) supports alternative means for completing mandatory inspections, including virtual inspections.
Town staff acted quickly to ensure minimal interruption to service and developed the new virtual process using realtime video connections with those requesting inspections. It was tested in early March and officially implemented March 17.
The Town’s permitting and inspection process is now completely technology-based and paperless. Since 2016, permit applications have been completed online and approved permits are sent by email. Now, inspections are performed virtually in real time. This allows projects to comply with provincial codes and Town services to continue without interruption, even with current COVID-19 limitations.
It generally takes 10 days for building applications to be processed. Inspections are required throughout a project’s life. Town Safety Codes Officers perform more than 5000 inspections every year.
